EDIT 3/2/2023 – I’m not certain that the position below accurately reflects my current thinking or behavior. I’m resurrecting this blog, and it’s been quite a while since I wrote this. It may be inaccurate and might need to be revised as new content is developed.
Portrait drawings are normally based on a photograph from subject’s Instagram feed or Google. Drawings are not simply direct tracings. Photos are used as a background layer for reference and SOME FEATURES MAY BE EFFECTIVELY TRACED, depending on the need and the circumstance, especially in the case of a portrait commission.
If I am creating a caricature or cartoon, I do not copy or trace someone else’s interpretation, but I may still use a photo as a background reference layer to get some proportions correct.
My art is not restricted to any arbitrary rules regarding “legitimacy”. It is NOT, however, the output from a “convert to sketch” app. I make these drawings with my own eyes and hands, using multiple tools and techniques, and I enjoy making drawings that people like to look at. This information is presented so that folks don’t think I’m misrepresenting myself in some fashion.
There may also be cases where more purely “digital” tools are used in creating my artwork. My intention is to make this clear in descriptions.
Thanks for looking!
